Result gives us “a lot of strength and will make us unstoppable”, says Laporta
Joan Laporta has secured another term as president of Barcelona after winning Sunday’s club election in a landslide victory over challenger Victor Font.
Laporta collected 68.18 per cent of votes from club members, well ahead of Font’s 27.78 per cent. The rest of the ballots (2.04 per cent) were blank.
Laporta celebrated victory by first thanking the club’s membership for their participation in a process he described as central to Barcelona’s image.
“First of all, I want to dedicate a few words of gratitude to this wonderful club we have,” Laporta said. “It’s great to see that members can still choose who represents us. This passion is a joy, it makes the club special, so thanks to Barca and all the members that voted today in a display of democracy.”

Voting took place at multiple locations, including at the Camp Nou, where various figures connected to the club, both current and past, turned out to cast their ballots. Among them were head coach Hansi Flick and most of the first-team players.
Even Barca women’s star and Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati was around to cast her vote. She was joined by teammate Laia Aleixandri. The rest of the women’s team were unavailable as they travelled away to play at Deportivo de La Coruña on Sunday.
“Today I can’t be in La Coruna with my teammates but I am here and that is very important,” said Bonmati. “There are a lot of people and I am proud to be at this Club. You know how I feel about Barca, this makes us different. After now, I’ll go be with the girls.”

Laporta’s decisive win extends his presidency for another five years and reinforces his authority. Importantly, it also provides stability to the club, as much of the current structure (including sporting director Deco who Font had declared he would replace) will be retained.
“The result itself is conclusive and it gives us a lot of strength, so much strength that it will make us unstoppable,” Laporta said. “We will keep defending Barcelona against everything and everyone. The upcoming years will be thrilling. They will be the best of our lives.”

The end of the election followed Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Sevilla, after which the players joined the polls. Not everyone had a smooth experience at the ballot box. Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was unable to vote after discovering his name was missing from the electoral register.
All Barcelona players are registered as socios (members who can vote) when they join the club but it is up to them to update their membership. Ter Stegen had not done so.
Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez, who had publicly spoken against Laporta and sided with Font, was also among those who participated in the vote.
Laporta was first president of Barcelona from 2003 and 2010. He then returned in 2021, defeating this same rival Font. The results ensure he will remain in charge until 2031.
