Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona: Barnes 86; Yamal 90+5 pen

There was unfettered joy around the Newcastle ground as the minutes ticked down to seconds and it looked like Harvey Barnes’ goal would be just enough for a win that will find a dedicated space in the annals of the club’s history.

Eddie Howe had already pointed out that this was the greatest match in the club’s recent history. It is certainly the first time Newcastle have ever played at this stage of the Champions League. Taking the advantage to Camp Nou next week was just of picture-book quality.

If only Malick Thiaw had not lost his focus with seconds remaining and kicked Dani Olmo in the shin, the midfielder going down to win a penalty, and Lamine Yamal stepping up to take it. It was all too cruel for Newcastle.

There was a special moment shortly before the penalty, where Howe and his assistant Jason Tindall stood with heads together, eyeing the 18-year-old Yamal and dreading the spotkick, willing him to miss. He did not.

Culers will have a word or two to say to Hansi Flick about his decisions on the night to put Barcelona in that position in the first place, not least the decision to substitute Pedri, who had until his removal been the best visiting player on the pitch. Or at least not start him if his fitness was a concern, bringing him on instead.

There may also be questions about the decision to not give Marcus Rashford a go from the beginning after his performance in this fixture in the league phase. The on-loan forward scored two goals to hand Barcelona a 2-1 victory.

Newcastle’s performance here was simply a repeat of that previous fixture. Stay solid, press relentlessly and choke up all of the midfield spaces that Barcelona enjoy. It was a move that Flick had anticipated before the game but his side still struggled to deal with it. Joan Garcia was highly active on a night when Barcelona could have conceded at any point but it was easy to tell that a goal was coming for Newcastle as the clock ticked on.

Newcastle’s brightest forward player Anthony Gordon had only been fit enough for the bench due to illness, and instead the central striking role was handed to William Osula, who is good, but not quite the greatest.

Anthony Elanga was a constant menace with his speed down the right, keeping Joao Cancelo frustrated for much of the game. Lewis Hall on the left kept an eye on Yamal but still had time to go forward. Elanga sent an early shot goalwards that was repelled by Garcia although the offside flag went up anyway.

Pedri had his hands full containing this side with their close pressing in midfield, even without captain and best player Bruno Guimaraes. Clear-cut chances were at a premium for Flick’s side. Fermin Lopez occasionally had space but could not fashion anything meaningful. Robert Lewandowski was starved of service and constantly harried by the irrepressible Dan Burn.

The striker had a half chance when Raphinha bolted down the left and squared, and stretching his leg out, Lewandowski could only send the ball narrowly wide.

Newcastle looked the more likely of the two sides to score in the second half. Osula headed just over from an Elanga cross, before the latter scorched past Cancelo and Pau Cubarsi on the right but delayed his cross too much and Garcia was able to gather.

In the 75th minute Barnes thought he had his moment, only to see his shot cannon back off the post. Joelinton, following up, bundled the rebound into the net but his joy was immediately curtailed by the offside flag.

Then with four minutes left in normal time, substitute Jacob Murphy floated a perfect cross to the far post, and Barnes ghosted past a static Barcelona defence to bundle past Garcia, who fondled the ball desperately but could not keep it out.

St James’ Park was alight with Newcastle only minutes away from a famous victory. Then it was seconds. And then Thiaw kicked Olmo and Yamal had his moment.
