Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will miss the Champions League last-16 clash with Atalanta after suffering a calf muscle tear during Bayern’s Bundesliga victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Bayern Munich will be without captain Manuel Neuer for their upcoming Champions League last-16 clash against Atalanta after the veteran goalkeeper suffered another calf injury. The setback comes just days before the crucial European tie.
Neuer picked up the injury during Bayern’s 4-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Friday. The club later confirmed that the 39-year-old had sustained a minor muscle tear in his calf.
While Bayern did not officially confirm a recovery timeline, reports in German media suggest the experienced goalkeeper could be sidelined for around two weeks. That absence would likely rule him out of both legs of the Champions League last-16 tie against Atalanta.
In addition to missing the European fixture, Neuer could also be unavailable for Bayern’s important Bundesliga clash against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The league leaders will be hoping their captain can return quickly as they approach the decisive stage of the season.
Injuries have troubled Neuer throughout the current campaign, particularly recurring issues with his calf. He was forced to sit out several matches earlier in the season and also missed 10 games during the previous campaign with a similar problem.
The long-serving goalkeeper, who turns 40 later this month, remains one of the most influential figures at Bayern. However, his future beyond this season remains uncertain as his current contract with the club expires at the end of the campaign.
Neuer retired from international football with Germany national football team in August 2024, but he has yet to confirm whether he intends to continue playing at club level beyond this season or extend his stay in Munich for another year.
