Midfielder is looking more and more like an elite player after a couple of injury-hit years
Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount believes he is “close” to getting back to peak form.
The midfielder has been held back by injuries since he joined United from Chelsea in the summer of 2023. This season, through his own personal efforts and United’s careful medical approach, he has become a much more regular presence and it looks like his worst injury days are behind him.
He has made 15 appearances in all competitions by Christmas, with nine starts. He has also scored three goals in the league so far, all of which were hugely important for United.
“I think I’m getting close to really getting back to that [his best],” Mount told Sky Sports. “I think now with all my experience that I’ve got and experiences that I’ve been through, I think it [his best level] can be higher than before.
“Over the last couple of years, it’s been difficult to get even close to that level. But now, I’ve had a really good pre-season and a lot of games. A lot of minutes in the legs. I feel like I’m getting close to being back.”
Mount was with United in the pre-season tour of the United States where Ruben Amorim’s side sought to create a new atmosphere around the squad and bring back some belief after a dreadful 2024-25 season where they finished 15th in the league and missed out on Europe with a disappointing defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao.
The Englishman said then that he was “feeling really, really good” and ready to write a new chapter in his career under Amorim. His hard work has paid off, with United always looking a better and tougher team to play against with Mount in it.
The player said: “There’s a lot that people don’t see, but within the group I think bringing that energy for myself and for the boys onto the pitch is super important.
“Seeing me start a press or pressing the goalkeeper when it’s not on, but then it also sets a trigger for the rest of the lads to go.
“I’ve been used a bit higher up in a position that I’m used to. I can go forward, I can get into the box. Also, when we don’t have the ball, I will drop in and help the lads in midfield.”
