3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps was last game for teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets

Lionel Messi helped create the first goal and provided two assists as Inter Miami claimed the MLS Cup for the first time in the club’s history on Saturday, beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Chase Stadium.

Miami scored from an early goal but after that they were second-best for much of the game. Vancouver controlled proceedings and created the more dangerous openings, but the match turned in the final 20 minutes when Messi set up Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende to secure the trophy.

“This was one of our main goals,” Messi said after being named MVP. “Last year we finished first in the league and unfortunately we were knocked out in the first round. The MLS was the ultimate prize. The team put in a tremendous effort and rose to the occasion.”

Two of Messi’s long-time teammates, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, were playing in their last game for the club after announcing their retirements earlier in the season.

Speaking about his longtime teammates, Messi said: “I’m happy for them. Finishing their careers this way is very nice for everyone. Something very beautiful is coming to an end for them, something to which they have devoted their entire lives.

“I wish them all the best. They are two friends whom I love very much, and I am happy that they can leave with this title.”

Reacting to the victory, club co-owner Sir David Beckham said: “All credit to Vancouver, they played a great game and put us under a lot of pressure. After their goal they were on top of us.

“When you give the ball to Leo [Messi], he creates chances. The team stuck together, and they’ve done that all year.”
