Duo eager for exit to get playing time ahead of 2026 World Cup
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said he understands why Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee are considering January exits but insists the club will prioritise their own needs ahead of the World Cup.
The two players have struggled for minutes under Amorim this season, falling down the pecking order after United reshaped their midfield and attack. Mainoo has played just 138 Premier League minutes since August, while Zirkzee has been involved for only 82 minutes in the league.
The lack of game time has affected their international prospects in a World Cup year, and there is growing interest from other clubs that can offer guaranteed playing time. According to reports, United do not wish to let the players go, especially the academy graduate Mainoo.
“I was a football player,” said Amorim. “I understand everything, and I want to help my players in every situation. I want my players to be happy. I understand the frustration of some players, seeing that the World Cup is there, and I know what it means for the World Cup, but Manchester United comes first.”
“If I can help the club and the players, I will be happy. If not I have to think about the team. The club comes first, so we have to think about the club and the team, and then everything can happen.”
