The midfielder takes a pay cut as a part of new contract agreement
Frenkie de Jong has signed a new long-term contract with Barcelona, extending his stay at the club until 2029.
The Netherlands midfielder’s previous deal was due to expire in 2026, but negotiations over a renewal had stalled earlier this year after he changed his agent.
However, despite speculation De Jong has long maintained that he and the Barcelona board are in sync. A contract extension was always a question of when rather than if.
The new agreement now secures the midfielder’s future in Catalonia for the next four years. De Jong and Pedri are the two pillars of Hansi Flick’s current midfield setup.
The Dutchman had been seriously linked with a move away from Barcelona in 2022 to rejoin his former manager at Ajax Erik ten Hag. However, the player opted to remain at Barcelona.
The player’s wages have also been revised in the new contract. De Jong will be taking a pay cut to bring his earnings much closer to Barcelona’s new salary structure.
A €500m release clause has also been inserted into his contract, reflecting his commitment to remaining at Barcelona.
