Sevilla 4-1 Barcelona: Bad day in Seville sees Hansi Flick’s side concede top spot in La Liga

With their rivals in Madrid having won against Villareal on Saturday, it was up to Barcelona to travel to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday and wrestle three points from Sevilla in order to move back to the top of La Liga.

It was always going to be a tricky tie, particularly with Hansi Flick’s side missing Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, but things went south very quickly after Ronald Araujo fouled Isaac Romero in the box and Alexis Sanchez converted from the spot in the 13th minute.

Romero himself then doubled Sevilla’s advantage after the half hour, finishing off a swift counter-attack.

Marcus Rashford, Hansi Flick’s last winger standing, lifted the champions’ spirits on the stroke of half-time when he lashed in on the volley from Pedri’s lofted pass. But Robert Lewandowski then wasted the opportunity to equalise in the second half when he dragged a penalty agonisingly wide after Alejandro Balde was fouled in the box.

Matters hung in the balance for much of the second half but Sevilla completed the mauling in stoppage time. First Jose Angel Carmona fired past Wojciech Szczesny from the right, although the Pole could have done better, before Akor Adams added the fourth from Chidera Ejuke’s cross from the left.
