Selecao manager hails “exemplary” leader and challenges him to motivate his teammates
Carlo Ancelotti has backed Manchester United midfielder Casemiro to captain Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.
The midfielder returned to international duty this year after nearly two years away and has immediately regained the trust of his former Real Madrid manager.
“Casemiro is an exemplary player, respected by all,” Ancelotti said. “He has the experience and the character to guide this team. For me, he can be the captain.
“He knows the demands of the top level, how to manage difficult moments and motivate his teammates.
“Being captain is not just about wearing an armband, it’s about setting an example every day. Casemiro does it naturally.”
The 33-year-old has endured a difficult period at United since after his impressive debut season. His form was especially poor in 2023-24, with speculation ultimately linking him to Saudi Arabia.
But he appeared to turn a corner under Ruben Amorim last season and has started in all but the one league game in which he was suspended for United this season.
Casemiro has almost 100 caps for Brazil but was dropped from the Selecao in October 2023. He was later recalled in June under Ancelotti when the Italian took over the reins.
