Milan City Council Approves Sale of San Siro to AC Milan and Inter Milan

The Milan City Council has voted in favor of selling San Siro to AC Milan and Inter Milan, paving the way for the construction of a new, modern stadium.

The Milan City Council has taken a significant step towards the future of San Siro, voting in favor of selling the stadium and surrounding land to AC Milan and Inter Milan.

The vote, which was passed with 24 votes in favor and 20 against, allows the two clubs to move forward with their plans to demolish most of the existing stadium and construct a new, modern arena.

The vote was not without controversy, with several councillors from the Democratic Party criticizing the proposal. Some councillors even branded the club presidents, Beppe Marotta and Paolo Scaroni, as “ancient” after their criticism of politics. However, the proposal ultimately gained the necessary support, thanks in part to the abstentions from Forza Italia.

The abstentions, which reduced the threshold required for a majority vote, proved vital in getting the proposal over the line. Forza Italia admitted that the proposal is flawed, but ultimately decided to abstain due to the potential benefits of the €1.2 billion project, including job creation, infrastructure development, and regeneration in the city.

The new stadium project will be privately owned by AC Milan and Inter Milan, bringing an end to decades of uncertainty over San Siro’s future. The proposal includes plans for a modern, state-of-the-art stadium that will meet the needs of both clubs and provide a world-class experience for fans.

During the vote, amendments to the proposal were discussed, including one for accessibility criteria to be compliant in the new project and initiatives to help boost sustainability. These amendments highlight the importance of ensuring that the new stadium is not only modern and functional but also accessible and sustainable.

The new stadium is set to be a major upgrade from the current San Siro, providing a state-of-the-art facility that will meet the needs of both clubs and their fans.
