Massimiliano Allegri’s arrival at AC Milan stopped Chelsea’s plans to sign goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with the Italian coach insisting the Frenchman will stay at the club.
According to reports, Chelsea had made Maignan a top priority and were close to wrapping up a deal worth around €18 million. However, Allegri’s arrival changed everything, as the Italian coach made it clear that he wants to keep Maignan at Milan.
Allegri’s desire to retain Maignan is driven by his confidence in the goalkeeper’s abilities. The coach believes Maignan is an important part of Milan’s team and has no intention of selling him.
This stance put an end to Chelsea’s hopes of signing Maignan, who was reportedly eager to join the Blues. Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, has echoed Allegri’s sentiments, emphasizing that Maignan is a key player for the club.
The negotiations between Chelsea and Milan had stalled due to disagreements over the transfer fee. Chelsea offered around €15 million, significantly lower than Milan’s asking price of €25 million. The failure to reach an agreement ultimately led to the collapse of the deal. With Maignan’s contract running until June 2026, Milan is in a strong position to retain their goalkeeper.
AC Milan’s decision to block Maignan’s move to Chelsea may have implications for their own transfer dealings.
The club had been interested in signing Strasbourg full-back Guela Doue, but the deal failed to materialize. Given that Strasbourg is owned by the same company as Chelsea and the two clubs have a close relationship, Milan’s decision to pull the plug on Maignan’s transfer may have damaged their chances of signing Doue.
