Germany defeated Northern Ireland 3-1, ending a three-match losing streak in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Germany ended a damaging three-match losing streak in World Cup qualifying with a much-needed 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion. The win was a significant relief for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, who had to bounce back from a disappointing loss against Slovakia during the week.

The match began well for Germany, with Serge Gnabry scoring an early goal in the 7th minute. Gnabry’s chip over the keeper was smooth and precise, giving Germany a 1-0 lead. The team’s return to three centre-backs seemed to be a good decision, as they were more compact and acted as a unit. However, Antonio Rüdiger wasn’t completely flawless and received a yellow card in the 26th minute.

Northern Ireland equalised in the 34th minute after Rüdiger’s mistake led to a corner. Isaac Price scored with a perfect volley, fizzing the ball directly between the goalkeeper and the crossbar. The half-time score was 1-1, with Germany dominating possession but struggling to create meaningful chances.

In the second half, Germany continued to dominate possession but lacked firepower. After 60 minutes, Nagelsmann made crucial substitutions, bringing on Nadiem Amiri and Kevin Behrens for Nick Woltemade and Serge Gnabry.

Amiri instantly injected energy into the game and was involved in many good attacks. He scored in the 69th minute, tapping in a cross that had evaded the Northern Ireland goalkeeper.

Just three minutes later, Florian Wirtz sealed the win with a magnificent free kick from 22 meters out, curling the ball over the wall and into the net. The German fans erupted in joy, and the team’s performance improved significantly after the substitutions. Germany’s third goal effectively ended the match, with Northern Ireland unable to mount a comeback.

The win has given Germany some much-needed momentum in their World Cup qualifying campaign. They’ll look to build on this victory when they host Luxembourg on October 10.
