As expected, it was a tight game throughout, but three minutes before the hour Liverpool got what turned out to be the winner.
Cody Gakpo created the chance when he made a run down the right and crossed for Florian Wirtz. The German was unable to make contact under pressure but the ball found Alexander Isak, who was unmarked near the six-yard box, and the Swede swept the ball past Djordje Petrovic for his fourth goal of the season.
Before the goal Isak had endured a largely quiet afternoon here, but his latest strike means he has now already scored more league goals in Liverpool’s opening five league games than he managed throughout last season.
Iraola received a warm reception on his first return to Bournemouth since leaving for Liverpool in the summer. The Spaniard spent three seasons with the Cherries, guiding them to their highest-ever Premier League points total and securing European football.
Bournemouth had the better opportunity during a cagey first half. Marcus Tavernier found Evanilson with a run down the left, but the striker’s attempt to flick the ball inside the near post was kept out by a sharp save from Alisson.
Liverpool had threatened from set pieces, with Dominik Szoboszlai twice going close from free-kicks. His first effort from a central position flew over, while his second attempt narrowly missed the post. Bradley Barcola also tested Petrovic before half-time, although the goalkeeper was able to save his deflected effort with his legs.
Bournemouth continued to make Liverpool work after the interval. Ryan Christie was unable to turn in Rayan’s cross, while Tyler Adams recovered possession after a misplaced pass had briefly put the hosts under pressure.
But Liverpool gradually gained control after taking the lead. Evanilson produced another effort with just over 20 minutes remaining, although Alisson comfortably dealt with it after coming out to collect a free-kick from Alex Scott.
Bournemouth were unable to turn their late set pieces into an equaliser and remain without a Premier League victory this season.
