Uruguay were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener despite dominating the second half.
Uruguay were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by a determined Saudi Arabia side in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite dominating large stretches of the contest in Miami.
The result came on a day of surprises in Group H, following Spain’s shock 0-0 draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde. As a result, all four teams in the group sit on one point after the opening round of fixtures.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side struggled to find their rhythm during a sluggish first half, with Saudi Arabia defending well and limiting Uruguay’s attacking threat. The South Americans created little of note as the heat and disciplined opposition made life difficult.
Saudi Arabia nearly broke the deadlock shortly before the interval when Abdulelah Al-Amri forced veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera into a sharp save. Moments later, the defender made no mistake from a corner situation, reacting quickest after Muslera spilled a header to poke home from close range and give the Saudis a surprise lead.

The goal sparked an immediate response from Bielsa, who made bold changes at half-time. Defender Matias Vina and striker Darwin Nunez were withdrawn, with Agustin Canobbio and Juan Manuel Sanabria introduced in an attempt to inject energy into the attack.
The substitutions transformed Uruguay’s performance. Playing with far greater intensity, they pinned Saudi Arabia deep inside their own half and began creating a steady stream of chances. Manuel Ugarte came agonisingly close to an equaliser on the hour mark when his powerful long-range effort crashed against the post.
As the pressure mounted, Saudi Arabia retreated further and further, relying on goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais and a resilient defensive display to preserve their advantage. Uruguay continued to attack relentlessly, finishing the second half with an astonishing 22 shots.
Their persistence was finally rewarded 10 minutes from time when Al-Owais failed to deal with a routine effort, allowing Maxi Araujo to pounce on the loose ball and fire home the equaliser.

Despite pushing for a winner in the closing stages, Uruguay could not find a way through, leaving Bielsa’s men with a point and plenty to ponder ahead of their crucial clash with Cape Verde. Saudi Arabia will take confidence from a hard-earned result against one of the tournament’s fancied sides.
