Tunisia Appoint Herve Renard After Sacking Coach Lamouchi During World Cup

Lamouchi’s sacking came after defeat to Sweden was followed by dressing room tensions and disagreements with federation officials

Tunisia have turned to Herve Renard to lead the national team for the remainder of the World Cup after dismissing Sabri Lamouchi following their opening defeat to Sweden.

Renard is expected to arrive at Tunisia’s training base in Mexico on Tuesday and take charge of his first session later in Monterrey, becoming the third coach to manage the country at a World Cup since 2018.

The appointment follows a highly disappointing start to Tunisia’s campaign. Lamouchi was removed after Sunday’s 5-1 defeat by Sweden, which led to tensions inside the dressing room and disagreements with federation officials that contributed to the decision.

The move is unprecedented in World Cup history. Tunisia is the first team to change head coaches after playing only one match at the tournament.

Renard brings extensive international experience and a reputation for success in African football. The 57-year-old previously guided Morocco at the 2018 World Cup, although they exited in the group stage after one draw and two defeats. Four years later he led Saudi Arabia to a memorable victory over Argentina in Qatar, but his side failed to progress after losing their remaining group matches.

Tunisia’s federation will hope Renard can stabilise the squad after the internal unrest and the damaging opening result. His immediate task will be to restore confidence and keep alive the team’s chances of reaching the knockout stage.

Former Tunisia international midfielder Wahbi Khazri, who served as Lamouchi’s assistant, is expected to remain on the coaching staff under Renard.
