Tottenham Hotspur have agreed an £85 million deal to sign Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, completing one of the biggest transfers of the summer after beating Manchester United to the highly-rated 21-year-old.
Tottenham moved quickly to secure Fernandes after seeing their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali stall. Their £80 million bid for the Italy international was rejected, prompting the North London club to shift their attention to the West Ham star.
Manchester United were also heavily interested in Fernandes, but ultimately decided against matching Tottenham’s valuation. Spurs have agreed to pay a guaranteed £85 million with no performance-related add-ons.

Fernandes arrives with a growing reputation despite suffering back-to-back Premier League relegations. His individual performances continued to attract admiration across Europe, with Paris Saint-Germain also monitoring his situation before Tottenham accelerated negotiations.
The move continues Tottenham’s aggressive start to the summer transfer window. The club have already strengthened several areas of the squad as they look to build a side capable of challenging at the top end of the Premier League next season.
Last week, Spurs agreed a deal to sign experienced goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka on a free transfer following the expiration of his Burnley contract.
The Slovakia international joins fellow defensive additions Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who arrived from Brighton in a £52 million deal.
Strengthening central midfield quickly became Tottenham’s next priority after reinforcing their defence. Tonali remained their preferred option initially, but Newcastle’s refusal to negotiate forced the club to identify alternative targets, with Fernandes emerging as the standout candidate.
By securing Fernandes ahead of Manchester United and other European heavyweights, Tottenham have made another major statement in the transfer market.
