Sunderland have made an offer to sign Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City.
The proposal includes paying part of the forward’s wages and the possibility of a permanent move next summer.
Grealish has entered the final year of his City contract and Sunderland’s offer would give them the option of securing him permanently when his current deal expires next summer. The former England international spent last season on loan at Everton but the club chose not to take up a purchase option worth about £50m.
Grealish has featured from the bench in both of City’s matches this season. He came on in the Community Shield defeat by Arsenal before making another second-half appearance in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League victory at Bournemouth.
City are understood to be willing to let Grealish leave this summer, either permanently or on loan. His departure would be another change to a forward group that has already seen Savio join Tottenham in a deal worth up to £85m. City have also agreed a loan move with an obligation for Omar Marmoush to join the north London club.
Grealish’s time at City has declined since he was a regular in the team that won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 2022-23. He made 50 appearances that season, but injury disrupted the following campaign and he started only 10 Premier League matches.
His opportunities fell further in 2024-25, when he started seven league games and was omitted from the squad for the final match against Fulham. Pep Guardiola said his absence was “nothing personal”. Grealish was then left out of City’s squad for the Club World Cup before joining Everton on loan.
A stress fracture in his foot in January restricted his season at Everton. He made 22 appearances for David Moyes’ side, scoring twice and providing six assists.
Grealish joined City from Aston Villa for a British-record £100m in 2021 and has made 159 appearances for the club. He previously made 213 appearances for Villa, scoring 32 goals and providing 43 assists, and helped them win promotion to the Premier League.
