Messi, Ronaldo, Haaland, Mbappe and Curacao’s Eloy Room stole the show in matchday two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The second round of matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced several individual masterclasses as some of football’s biggest stars stepped up for their countries.

From Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo rolling back the years to Erling Haaland continuing his remarkable scoring form and Eloy Room producing a goalkeeping performance for the ages, Matchday Two belonged to a select group of players who delivered when their teams needed them most.
Lionel Messi
At 39 years old, Lionel Messi continues to prove that class is permanent. The Argentine captain delivered another World Cup masterclass, scoring twice in Argentina’s victory over Austria to guide the defending champions closer to the knockout rounds.

Messi was at the heart of everything Argentina did well in attack. His movement between the lines caused constant problems for Austria’s defence, while his vision and passing helped Argentina maintain control throughout the contest. However, it was his finishing that stole the headlines.
His brace demonstrated the qualities that have defined his legendary career. Whether dropping deep to create opportunities or arriving in dangerous positions to finish them, Messi once again showed why he remains one of the most decisive players in international football. Every time Argentina needed inspiration, their captain provided it.
The two goals also strengthened Messi’s position in the Golden Boot race and reinforced Argentina’s belief that they can successfully defend their World Cup crown. With the knockout rounds approaching, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner appears to be peaking at exactly the right moment.
Kylian Mbappe
Kylian Mbappe continued his outstanding World Cup campaign with another devastating display as France defeated Iraq 3-0 to secure their place in the Round of 32.

The Real Madrid superstar scored twice and looked dangerous every time he touched the ball. His first goal was a trademark strike from the edge of the area, rifling an unstoppable effort into the top corner after receiving a pass from Michael Olise. It immediately set the tone for another dominant French performance.
Mbappe added his second goal after the break when he capitalised on a defensive mistake and calmly finished into an empty net. The brace took his World Cup tally to four goals in just two matches and underlined his status as one of the tournament favourites for the Golden Boot.
Beyond the goals, Mbappe’s pace, movement and ability to stretch defences created space for his teammates throughout the match. France look like genuine contenders once again, and Mbappe is leading the charge.
Cristiano Ronaldo
After enduring criticism following Portugal’s opening draw against DR Congo, Cristiano Ronaldo responded in emphatic fashion against Uzbekistan.
The Portuguese captain scored twice in a commanding 5-0 victory and became the first player in football history to score in six different World Cup tournaments. It was a historic night for the 41-year-old, who showed that he still has the ability to influence matches on the biggest stage.

Ronaldo opened the scoring early with a powerful finish before adding a second before half-time with a composed effort after being played through on goal. The veteran striker could easily have left the pitch with a hat-trick or even four goals, as he created several additional opportunities and forced multiple saves from the Uzbek goalkeeper.
More importantly, Ronaldo looked sharp, motivated and heavily involved throughout the game. His movement caused constant problems and his finishing was clinical. After a difficult week filled with questions about his future and his place in the team, he delivered the perfect answer on the pitch.
Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland’s remarkable scoring run continued as he netted twice in Norway’s crucial 3-2 victory over Senegal.
The Manchester City striker once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the world’s most lethal finishers. His first goal arrived shortly after half-time following a swift Norwegian counterattack, with Haaland finishing clinically after being released by Martin Odegaard.

He then added a second goal later in the match, converting Patrick Berg’s cross to restore Norway’s two-goal cushion after Senegal had briefly fought their way back into the contest.
What made the performance even more impressive was that Haaland could have scored more. He hit the post, missed an open goal and constantly threatened the Senegal defence whenever Norway attacked. Even on a night when he was not at his most clinical, he still walked away with two goals.
His brace took him level among the tournament’s leading scorers and helped Norway become one of the first teams to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
Eloy Room
While the forwards grabbed headlines, perhaps no individual performance was more remarkable than Eloy Room’s display for Curacao against Ecuador.
The experienced goalkeeper produced one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in World Cup history as Curacao earned a historic 0-0 draw and their first-ever World Cup point. Room finished the match with an incredible 15 saves, setting a new record for the most saves in a 90-minute World Cup match.

From the opening minutes, Ecuador bombarded the Curacao goal with waves of attacks. Enner Valencia, John Yeboah, Gonzalo Plata, Moises Caicedo and Kevin Rodriguez all tested Room repeatedly, but the goalkeeper somehow found an answer every time.
His reflexes, positioning and composure frustrated Ecuador throughout the contest. Several of his saves were genuinely world-class, including close-range stops and crucial interventions during intense periods of pressure.
The draw leaves Curacao dreaming of an unlikely place in the knockout rounds, but regardless of what happens next, Room’s performance has already secured its place in World Cup history. It was the type of display that turns a goalkeeper into a national hero overnight.
