Cristiano Ronaldo described Portugal’s World Cup win over Croatia on the anniversary of Diogo Jota’s death as an “unbelievable coincidence of life”.
Cristiano Ronaldo described it as a “coincidence of life” after Portugal’s dramatic World Cup knockout victory over Croatia came almost exactly one year after the tragic death of his former international teammate, Diogo Jota.
Following Portugal’s thrilling 2-1 victory, Ronaldo and the rest of the squad gathered on the pitch holding up Jota’s iconic number 21 shirt in an emotional tribute. The gesture came after Gonçalo Ramos’ late winner secured Portugal’s place in the next round of the tournament.

Speaking after the match, Ronaldo admitted the timing of the occasion had left a deep impression on the entire squad. He revealed that the players had spoken about the anniversary before kick-off and viewed it as an extraordinary moment.
“The coincidence of life, it’s unbelievable,” Ronaldo said. “We knew it before the game. It was a very special moment. We spoke as a group about it today, the coincidence of life. It’s unbelievable.”
Ronaldo also paid his personal tribute by wearing Jota’s number 21 jersey while conducting his post-match television interviews, ensuring the memory of his late teammate remained at the centre of Portugal’s celebrations.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez echoed his captain’s emotions, saying the victory carried far greater significance than simply securing qualification. He explained that advancing in the tournament while remembering Jota made the occasion especially meaningful for the entire nation.
Jota and his brother, André Silva, lost their lives in a car accident in Spain on July 3 last year while the Liverpool forward was travelling back to England for pre-season. His passing shocked the football world and left a lasting impact on Portuguese football.

Portugal have honoured Jota throughout the World Cup. Before their opening group-stage match against DR Congo in Houston, a black-and-white image of the former forward was displayed on the stadium’s giant screens.
Thursday’s victory over Croatia provided another emotional opportunity for the squad to celebrate his memory while continuing their pursuit of World Cup glory.
