Roma strengthened their push for Champions League qualification with a fiery 2-0 victory over Lazio in the Rome derby.
Roma moved a step closer to securing Champions League football after defeating Lazio 2-0 in a tense and dramatic Derby della Capitale at the Stadio Olimpico. The result lifted Gian Piero Gasperini’s side into fourth place in the Serie A standings with one game remaining, while Lazio’s winless streak against their city rivals stretched to five matches.
Lazio goalkeeper Alessio Furlanetto endured a difficult start on his derby debut, first being forced into action to stop Nuno Tavares from accidentally turning Niccolo Pisilli’s dangerous free-kick into his own net.
Roma continued to pile on the pressure through a series of corners, with Furlanetto also required to deal with a deflected Wesley Franca strike as the hosts controlled much of the early tempo.
Lazio gradually grew into the contest and thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Boulaye Dia bundled the ball into the net after several attempts, but the flag quickly went up for offside. The visitors continued to threaten through Tijjani Noslin and Matteo Cancellieri, but Roma struck first five minutes before the break when Gianluca Mancini powered home a header from Pisilli’s inswinging corner.
Roma nearly doubled their advantage after the restart through a stunning Donyell Malen volley and a dangerous Paulo Dybala free-kick, before Mancini once again rose highest from a corner to score his second header of the evening.

Tempers eventually boiled over in the final stages following a heated confrontation between Mancini and Daniel Maldini, sparking a mass scuffle that resulted in red cards for Wesley Franca and Nicolo Rovella as both teams were reduced to 10 men.
Roma comfortably saw out the closing moments to secure an enormous derby victory, with Gasperini becoming only the second Roma manager in the last 50 years to win his first two Rome derbies, while Lazio suffered back-to-back league defeats for just the second time this season.
