Mourinho reportedly viewed the player as a key addition in midfield but the club went in a different direction
Real Madrid were linked with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes this summer, with new head coach Jose Mourinho seeking reinforcements in midfield.
The Portuguese international was reported to be one of Mourinho’s leading targets this window. The Madrid manager viewed him as a key addition who could provide greater energy and flexibility in midfield.
Talks had progressed with the player and West Ham through his agent Jorge Mendes, and an agreement was reportedly close before Madrid’s hierarchy decided not to give the move the final approval, according to sources.
Fernandes made 36 Premier League appearances for West Ham United last season and was sought after by a number of top Premier League clubs, including the two Manchester clubs and Tottenham. West Ham valued the player at £85m, despite their getting relegated last season.
Madrid, much like the Manchester clubs, were reportedly unwilling to meet the financial terms involved. The Spanish club considered that figure too high for the position during the current window.
Instead, Madrid signed Bernardo Silva as a free agent from Manchester City. Reports said Mourinho believed both players could have fitted into the same squad, but the club’s leadership decided against pursuing Fernandes, who ultimately joined Tottenham.
