Striker’s header for Mexico against South Africa meant more to him than just another goal
When Raul Jimenez headed in Mexico’s second goal against South Africa, it was a cathartic moment for the former Wolves and Fulham, and now again Wolves, striker.
The goal secured a comfortable opening victory for the hosts, but it was also a personal milestone for one of Mexico’s most accomplished forwards
Throughout his international career, despite appearing at three previous World Cups, Jimenez had never scored on football’s biggest stage. His breakthrough finally arrived at the age of 35.
Six years ago in November 2020, while playing for Wolves, Jimenez suffered a fractured skull following a collision with the then Arsenal defender David Luiz. The injury required emergency surgery and there were even concerns about whether Jimenez could continue playing football.
Physical rehabilitation was necessary but for a striker whose game relied heavily on bravery in aerial duels, there was a mental side to it as well, where he had to gradually rebuild confidence to compete.

Jimenez eventually returned wearing the protective headgear that he has worn ever since. He also wore the gear when he scored on Thursday. It was especially notable that he scored with his head, as if underlining his comeback from that life-threatening head injury six years back.
Jimenez is an important player for Mexico. His goal against South Africa was the 46th of his international career, moving him up to second in the country’s list of all-time top scorers, behind Javier Hernandez “Chicharito” (52).
With group matches against South Korea and the Czech Republic still to come, his country will hope it is not his last contribution at this World Cup.
