Racing Santander 0-3 Real Madrid: Mbappe 11 pen, Bellingham 21, Diomande 36

Real Madrid beat Racing Santander 3-0 on Sunday for their fourth consecutive victory in La Liga. They have now won six matches in all competitions and are just three points behind leaders Barcelona, who beat Alaves 6-1 on Saturday.

With the opening goal from a penalty in the 11th minute, Kylian Mbappe put a difficult week behind him. The French forward finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting to Harry Kane just 28 points behind, out of totals of 1,027 and 1,055 respectively, making it one of the closest-run in the award’s history.

Mbappe then had to apologise after his comments in a video that sparked controversy about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Madrid’s match was among several Spanish fixtures not shown on Chinese state television following the fallout.

Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande also found the net as Madrid wrapped up the game before half-time. Jose Mourinho’s side were quick to threaten and nearly opened the scoring when Bellingham met Arda Guler’s cross with a close-range header, but Racing goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala produced an excellent save to keep the effort out.

The hosts could not hold on for long, however. Alvaro Mantilla brought down Mbappe inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Mbappe took responsibility and sent a powerful strike past Agirrezabala to give Madrid the lead.

Racing had a chance to respond almost immediately, but Thibaut Courtois was equal to Iker Luque’s low effort. Then Madrid doubled their lead midway through the first half. Guler found Bellingham with a well-timed pass and the England midfielder went around the goalkeeper before finishing into an empty net. It was his first goal since September and his 50th for the club.

Diomande then added a third in spectacular fashion. The summer signing collected a loose ball near the edge of the area and fired a first-time shot into the top-left corner. The goal was his third in four matches and left Racing with a difficult task before the break.

Guler nearly joined the scorers but Agirrezabala made another save to deny him.

Racing showed more intent after half-time and Yassir Zabiri found space to create two chances. Neither effort troubled Courtois, however, and Madrid remained comfortable.

Mbappe came close to adding a fourth when he cut inside and hit the post. Racing also had a brief opportunity to reduce the deficit after the referee awarded a penalty for an alleged handball by Aurelien Tchouameni. The decision was overturned following a VAR review.
