Graham Potter hailed the partnership between Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres after Sweden cruised to a 5-1 win over Tunisia in their opening World Cup match.
Sweden head coach Graham Potter praised the growing partnership between Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres after the attacking duo inspired a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Scandinavian side made an emphatic start to their Group F campaign, producing an impressive attacking display that overwhelmed Tunisia from start to finish. Yasin Ayari opened the scoring early in the contest and later added another goal, while substitute Mattias Svanberg also got on the scoresheet.
However, much of the attention after the match focused on the impressive combination of Isak and Gyokeres. Both forwards found the net and constantly troubled the Tunisian defence with their movement, creativity and finishing ability throughout the game.

Speaking after the victory, Potter highlighted the understanding developing between his two star attackers. He believes their partnership can become one of the most dangerous combinations at the tournament as they continue to gain experience playing alongside each other.
“Individually, they are top players, but together they can be a real threat,” Potter said. “I think they will improve even more the more they play together because they complement each other very well.”
The former Chelsea manager also praised the overall performance of his squad, noting that while Sweden were not flawless, the team functioned effectively and allowed their attacking players to showcase their quality. Potter was particularly pleased with the control his side displayed during large portions of the match.
The victory marked the first-ever World Cup meeting between Sweden and Tunisia and extended a difficult period for the North African side. Tunisia had not conceded a goal during qualification but have now shipped five goals in consecutive matches after also losing 5-0 to Belgium in a pre-tournament friendly.

Sweden’s convincing win leaves them top of Group F with three points after the Netherlands and Japan played out an entertaining 2-2 draw earlier in the day. Potter knows tougher challenges lie ahead, however, with Sweden set to face the Netherlands on June 20 in Houston. “We know we’ll meet a top team next and we have to be ready for that,” he said as his side turned their focus toward a crucial second group-stage encounter.
