Oliver Glasner has reportedly become Bayer Leverkusen’s preferred choice for the head coach role as the club aims to finalise its managerial decision by early June.

Oliver Glasner has reportedly emerged as the leading internal candidate to become Bayer Leverkusen’s next head coach as the Bundesliga club intensifies its search for a new manager.

According to reports from Germany, Leverkusen are aiming to finalise their coaching decision by early June, with the former VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt boss now viewed as the frontrunner for the role. Key club figure Werner Wenning is believed to be heavily involved in the process, with the Bayer hierarchy carefully evaluating what a new coach could bring to improve the team moving forward.

Leverkusen are determined to avoid making another rushed appointment after a turbulent period that has already seen major uncertainty surrounding the futures of Erik ten Hag and Kasper Hjulmand.

Although Hjulmand remaining in charge has not been completely ruled out, reports suggest that such a move would send the wrong message internally after the club failed to secure Champions League qualification.

Glasner’s experience in German football and his reputation for building disciplined, competitive sides are believed to make him an attractive option for the Leverkusen hierarchy as they seek stability and renewed direction.

Meanwhile, other candidates linked with the position appear to be moving further away from the BayArena. Girona coach Míchel is now reportedly leaning towards a move to Ajax, with the Dutch giants said to have advanced negotiations more aggressively.

Speculation surrounding Brazilian coach Felipe Luis has also been dismissed, leaving Glasner firmly at the centre of Leverkusen’s plans as the club prepares for a crucial summer rebuild ahead of next season.
