Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland believes his early penalty save against Brazil set the tone for the famous 2-1 victory that sent the Scandinavians into the quarter-finals.
Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland believes his first-half penalty save proved to be the turning point in his side’s remarkable 2-1 victory over Brazil, a result that secured one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup and booked their place in the quarter-finals.
Nyland denied Bruno Guimaraes from the penalty spot early in the contest, preserving Norway’s clean sheet at a crucial stage. The save gave the Scandinavian side a significant boost before Erling Haaland struck twice in the final 11 minutes to stun the five-time world champions.
Neymar’s penalty deep into stoppage time only served as a late consolation as Brazil crashed out in the Round of 16.

Reflecting on the key moment, Nyland admitted the save gave both him and his teammates the confidence to believe they could achieve something special. “Obviously when you are able to save a penalty that early, it is then very hard to beat you,” he said. “It was a great moment for myself but also for the team to give ourselves some breathing space.”
The veteran goalkeeper also praised Norway’s clinical finishing in the closing stages after weathering long spells of Brazilian pressure. He said the team timed their goals perfectly, allowing them to complete one of the greatest victories in Norwegian football history.

For Nyland, however, the significance of the result extends far beyond reaching the last eight. The 35-year-old hopes Norway’s memorable triumph will inspire a new generation of young footballers back home to dream of representing their country on the biggest stage.
“We have written some history,” Nyland said. “Hopefully many young kids in Norway can relive this moment when they go to play football and dream that one day they can be in the same position as me. It shows that it is possible, no matter where you come from.”
Norway will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between Mexico and England.
Buoyed by their famous victory over Brazil, Ståle Solbakken’s side will believe another major upset could be within reach.
