31-year-old surplus to requirements; move ends six-year stay at the Etihad

Manchester City’s Nathan Ake will join Fenerbahce this summer after the clubs agreed a deal worth £7m plus £1.5m in potential add-ons.

The Turkish club confirmed the transfer on Saturday after announcing that an agreement had been reached with City.

The move ends Ake’s six-year stay at the Etihad Stadium, with the Netherlands international entering the final year of his contract.

The 31-year-old had been expected to leave City this summer after falling down the pecking order. He started only six Premier League matches during the 2025-26 campaign, although he remained at the club through the second half of the season as injuries affected Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and John Stones.

His departure comes during a summer of significant change at City following the appointment of Enzo Maresca as Guardiola’s successor. Alongside the defender, long-serving midfielder Bernardo Silva has also left for Real Madrid, while Stones has departed after nine seasons at the club.

Ake has featured for the Netherlands at the World Cup, playing in three of their four matches and starting twice. He was substituted in the 71st minute of the last-32 defeat by Morocco, which ended in a penalty shootout.

During his time at City, Ake made 177 appearances and was part of the squad that won the treble in 2023. He played the full match in the 1-0 victory over Inter in the Champions League final.

Capable of playing at centre-back or left-back, Ake won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and three League Cups under Pep Guardiola.

Ake came through the academy at Feyenoord before joining Chelsea as a youth player. He later established himself at Bournemouth, making 121 appearances before City signed him for £40m in 2020.
