Napoli have confirmed that Scott McTominay will be sidelined for around a month after being diagnosed with a mild, benign heart arrhythmia that requires corrective surgery.

The Serie A champions announced on Tuesday that the 29-year-old midfielder will undergo a cardiac ablation procedure using pulsed field ablation (PFA) in the coming days. Napoli expect McTominay to return after the upcoming international break.

The news comes as a blow to Napoli, with McTominay having featured in both of their Serie A matches this season. He was also involved in their recent 2-1 defeat to Como before the club confirmed the nature of his problem.

McTominay’s absence could be particularly significant with Napoli facing a demanding run of fixtures. He is expected to miss upcoming league matches against Inter, Arsenal, Bologna and Fiorentina while he recovers.

The Scotland international is also likely to miss his country’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia. The timing is especially unfortunate as Scotland prepare to begin a new era under head coach Sebastien Pocognoli.

Despite the concern surrounding any heart-related issue, Napoli have described McTominay’s arrhythmia as mild and benign, and the club expects him to return once he has completed his recovery.

McTominay has become an important figure in Naples since arriving from Manchester United, and his absence will leave Napoli without one of their most influential midfielders during a crucial early-season spell.
