Mykhailo Mudryk is free to play again after resolving his doping case with the FA, but does the Chelsea winger still have a future at Stamford Bridge?
For the first time in nearly two years, Mykhailo Mudryk can finally focus on football again. After resolving his long-running doping case with the Football Association, the Chelsea winger is immediately eligible to return to competitive action.
The decision brings an end to one of the most difficult chapters of his career, but it also raises an important question: does he still have a future at Chelsea?
Mudryk had not featured in a competitive match since November 2024 after returning an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium during an out-of-competition test while on international duty with Ukraine.
Although the FA initially handed him a four-year suspension, the winger appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the case has now been settled. Mudryk accepted a suspension equal to the time he had already served, allowing him to return to football immediately.
The FA also revealed an important detail behind the resolution. Mudryk’s sample contained only a low concentration of meldonium, and changes made to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) technical guidelines mean that, if the same test had been conducted today, it would not have resulted in an adverse finding. While those changes were not applied retrospectively, they formed part of the context that allowed the appeal to be resolved.
Throughout the process, Mudryk consistently maintained that he had never knowingly taken a banned substance. “As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance,” the Ukrainian said after the ruling. Chelsea also welcomed the outcome, saying they were pleased the matter had been concluded and looked forward to helping the winger return to full fitness and rejoin the squad.

Chelsea Has Changed Without Mudryk
While Mudryk’s return is undoubtedly positive for both player and club, the situation at Chelsea is very different from the one he left behind.
During his 20-month absence, Chelsea’s attack has evolved significantly. New manager Xabi Alonso has inherited a squad packed with attacking talent, while the club has continued investing heavily in new forwards and creative players. Competition for places has never been stronger.
The winger who once arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth an initial £61 million was expected to become one of the faces of Chelsea’s long-term project. Instead, his enforced absence allowed others to establish themselves, leaving Mudryk with the difficult task of rebuilding both his fitness and his place in the team.
A Long Road Back
Sources close to the player believe he is confident of returning to his best after spending his suspension maintaining his physical condition through private coaching, individual training sessions and a dedicated fitness camp in Austria.
However, even those around him acknowledge that there is no substitute for regular training and competitive football at the highest level.

Chelsea are expected to support his reintegration, but there is no guarantee that it will happen immediately in the first team. A loan move, potentially to sister club Strasbourg, has been mentioned as one possible route to rebuilding his match sharpness, while a permanent transfer cannot be completely ruled out if opportunities remain limited.
