The contest began at a frantic pace, with both teams flying into tackles and refusing to give each other time on the ball. While the Netherlands enjoyed more possession and tried to dictate the tempo, Morocco looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.
Bart Verbruggen produced two outstanding saves to deny Neil El Aynaoui’s powerful header and Achraf Hakimi’s thunderous long-range effort.
Despite several promising attacks, clear-cut chances remained limited before halftime.
Morocco returned after the break with renewed energy and looked the more threatening side. Ayyoub Bouaddi failed to take advantage of an early opening before Brahim Diaz saw his effort crowded out.
Hakimi continued to torment the Dutch defence and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when his fierce strike rattled the crossbar.
Although Morocco dominated large spells of the second half, it was the Netherlands who struck first. In the 71st minute, substitute Wout Weghorst flicked the ball into the path of Crysencio Summerville, whose clever pass found Cody Gakpo.

The Liverpool forward kept his composure to fire a low finish beyond Yassine Bounou and put the Dutch within touching distance of victory.
Just as it looked like the Netherlands would hold on, Morocco found a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time.
Chemsdine Talbi delivered a superb cross into the penalty area, where Issa Diop rose highest to head beyond Verbruggen, sending the Moroccan supporters into wild celebrations and forcing the match into extra time.
Extra time produced more drama but no winner.
Verbruggen made one of the saves of the tournament by somehow denying Soufiane Rahimi from point-blank range, while both teams continued to search for a decisive goal.
With neither side able to find the breakthrough, the tie was settled by a tense penalty shootout.
The shootout swung back and forth before Morocco emerged victorious.
Neil El Aynaoui’s early miss was cancelled out when Justin Kluivert struck the post, while Verbruggen’s attempted save on Rahimi’s penalty accidentally carried the ball over the line.
Quinten Timber later fired wide before Bounou brilliantly denied Summerville, allowing Ismael Saibari to convert the winning penalty and send Morocco into the last 16.
