Mexico goalkeeping icon Guillermo Ochoa has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to one of the most distinguished careers in the history of Mexican football. The veteran goalkeeper confirmed his decision through a heartfelt message shared on social media.
The 41-year-old bows out after making history by appearing at his sixth FIFA World Cup. His final appearance came during Mexico’s 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic, where he entered the match for the closing 12 minutes and received a standing ovation from supporters inside the iconic Azteca Stadium.
It was a fitting farewell for a player whose journey began at the same venue more than two decades ago. Ochoa made his senior debut for Club América in 2004 before embarking on a career that would see him become one of Mexico’s greatest-ever footballers.

Ochoa represented Mexico across six FIFA World Cups, beginning with Germany 2006 before also featuring at South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 and the 2026 tournament. His performances on football’s biggest stage, particularly his memorable displays against Brazil and Germany, cemented his reputation as one of the finest World Cup goalkeepers of his generation.
Away from international football, Ochoa enjoyed a successful club career that lasted 22 years. He played in several of Europe’s top leagues, representing clubs in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Portugal, while also maintaining a lasting connection with Mexican football through Club América.
