Kylian Mbappe admitted France’s tactics failed against Spain as Les Bleus crashed out of the World Cup, vowing to learn from the painful semi-final defeat.
France captain Kylian Mbappe admitted his side got their tactics wrong after Spain produced a commanding display to secure a 2-0 victory in the World Cup semi-finals, ending Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching a third consecutive final.
Mbappe had been one of the standout performers of the tournament, scoring eight goals to lead France’s impressive attacking campaign. However, the Real Madrid forward was unable to inspire his side against a disciplined Spain team that controlled proceedings from start to finish at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Reflecting on the defeat, Mbappe acknowledged that France failed to execute the game plan they had prepared for one of the tournament favourites. He described the result as a bitter disappointment for both himself and the rest of the squad.

“I don’t think we played the match we wanted to play – whether tactically, technically or in terms of our overall performance level,” Mbappe told French reporters. “When you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.”
The France skipper explained that the team’s objective had been to press Spain aggressively and prevent Luis de la Fuente’s side from controlling possession. Instead, Spain comfortably dictated the tempo, forcing France onto the back foot for long spells.
Mbappe identified the midfield battle as the decisive factor, with Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni repeatedly overwhelmed by Spain’s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz. He admitted France struggled to cope with being consistently outnumbered in central areas.
“We kept finding ourselves outnumbered three against two in midfield,” Mbappe said. “Against Spain, that’s a real problem. When you put everything together, the result is defeat. It’s a huge disappointment.”
Despite the painful exit, Mbappe insisted France must recover quickly and use the setback as motivation for future tournaments. He said the squad would take time to reflect before returning with renewed determination, stressing that football offers little time to dwell on disappointment. “We have to pick ourselves up, go on vacation and move on to the next chapter,” he said. “Football waits for no one. We have to start over, put this failure behind us and learn from it.”
