The Premier League officially resumes tomorrow as Arsenal begin their title defence by hosting Coventry City at the Emirates.
Arsenal ended the 2025/26 Premier League season as champions. The Gunners ended a 22-year wait as Mikel Arteta finally guided his team to victory after back-to-back second-place finishes.
Winning the Premier League is the first obstacle; defending it is the bigger issue. Arsenal have never defended the Premier League title; even the Invincibles in the 2003/2004 season didn’t defend theirs.
Arteta now has a huge task in front of him, and he seems duly prepared for the task ahead. Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield on Sunday, and it has sent a message to the rest of the Premier League teams that if you come for the king, you’d best not miss.
Coventry will be the first to challenge Mikel Arteta’s team as they travel to the Emirates on the opening day of the new Premier League season.

Fresh for the Championship, Lampard has an uphill task in front of him. He will want to start on a good foot, but Arsenal will not make it easy. The Sky Blues go into this game with the confidence from winning the Championship with an 11-point gap over their closest rivals, Ipswich Town. But this is the Premier League.
The stakes and intensity are higher, and Arsenal will definitely give them a taste of that on opening day.
Team News
Arsenal fans could see Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice return to the starting XI after making cameos off the bench in the Community Shield. Timber and Saliba are still dealing with injuries, and this could give way for White and Mosquera to retain their places in the starting XI. Arteta has also hinted that Guimaraes may not feature in the opening game of the season as the Brazilian was seen with an ice pack on his leg after the Community Shield.
As for Coventry, Haji Wright and Luke Woolfenden are unavailable for selection through injury, while Jack Rudoni and Frank Onyeka are facing late fitness tests. There are expected to be a number of debutants in the Coventry XI for this match, with Carl Rushworth, Yirenkyi, Loum Tchaouna, and Aurele Amenda all potentially being included in the starting side.
Head Coach Frank Lampard provides an update on Haji Wright.
