Roberto Martinez hailed Portugal’s disciplined display in their 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, saying his side played with their heads rather than their hearts as Cristiano Ronaldo starred with a historic brace.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez praised his team’s maturity and discipline following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, insisting the performance showed how much his players had learned from their frustrating World Cup opener against DR Congo.

The Portuguese came into the match under pressure after being held to a 1-1 draw in their first Group K fixture. However, they responded in emphatic fashion, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice to become the first player in history to find the net at six different FIFA World Cups.

Martinez explained that one of the biggest lessons from the opening game was maintaining structure and composure after taking the lead. 

Against DR Congo, Portugal lost control after scoring early, allowing their opponents opportunities to counterattack and disrupt their rhythm.

Reflecting on that performance, Martinez aid his side had relied too much on emotion rather than tactical discipline. This time, however, he felt the players approached the game with greater intelligence, remaining organised and focused throughout the contest.

Portugal’s intent was evident from the opening whistle as they moved the ball quickly, pressed aggressively, and constantly threatened the Uzbek defence. The European side created 17 attempts on goal, with eight of those efforts hitting the target in a dominant display from start to finish.

Even after building a comfortable lead, Martinez’s players continued to attack with purpose. Ronaldo himself had opportunities to complete a hat-trick, while Portugal maintained their intensity deep into the second half, refusing to ease off despite the result already being beyond doubt.

The coach reserved special praise for his captain, highlighting that Ronaldo’s value extends far beyond his goals. Martinez pointed to the 41-year-old’s relentless work ethic, leadership, and willingness to create space for teammates as qualities that continue to make him a crucial figure for the national team.

With four points from their opening two matches, Portugal are now in a strong position heading into their final group game against Colombia.  Martinez also dismissed concerns over the team’s slow start to the tournament, arguing that success at a World Cup is built through a process rather than perfection from the opening match. 

According to the Portuguese boss, difficult moments early in a tournament can often provide the foundation for a deeper and more successful run later on.
