Portugal coach Roberto Martinez says his squad remains united despite criticism after the DR Congo draw, while defending Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of a must-win World Cup clash with Uzbekistan.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has insisted his team are feeling no pressure ahead of their crucial World Cup group-stage clash against Uzbekistan, despite the criticism that followed their disappointing opening draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Seleção were expected to begin their tournament with a victory but were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw.

Despite dominating possession throughout the contest, Portugal struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and managed just one shot on target, a sixth-minute header from Joao Neves.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, Martinez acknowledged that his side lost their structure after a promising start against Congo. However, the Spanish coach remains confident that the lessons learned from the opener will help Portugal deliver a much-improved performance.

Martinez stressed that the squad has responded positively to the criticism and believes the experience has only strengthened the bond within the dressing room. He dismissed suggestions that the team is under pressure, insisting that the players remain fully focused on their objectives.

“We are strong and focused,” Martinez said. “Our group is even more united than before. This is part of the process. Tension is not part of our team. Criticism is normal after a disappointing result, but it does not affect how we prepare.”

The Portugal boss also revealed that nearly his entire squad is available for selection. Aside from Tomas Araujo, who remains unavailable, all players are fit, including Ruben Dias, who missed the opening match but is now ready to return to action.

Martinez also came to the defence of captain Cristiano Ronaldo after the 41-year-old faced renewed scrutiny following his performance against Congo.

Some pundits have suggested Portugal should consider leaving Ronaldo on the bench, but the coach remains fully supportive of his veteran forward.

According to Martinez, Ronaldo continues to play a vital tactical role for the team. The coach praised the five-time Ballon d’Or winner for his movement, leadership, and commitment to the national side, describing him as a role model.

With Colombia already leading Group K after beating Uzbekistan, Martinez knows victory is essential if Portugal are to stay on track for qualification.

He remains convinced his side will respond positively and produce the level of performance needed to secure all three points.
