Midfielder was expected to be moved on this summer having failed to impress in two years
Manchester United are concerned that Manuel Ugarte could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after the midfielder suffered a suspected serious knee injury during Uruguay’s World Cup defeat to Spain.
The 25-year-old was taken off on a stretcher in tears shortly before half-time after appearing to twist his knee in an accidental collision with Uruguay teammate Mathias Olivera. Uruguay were ultimately eliminated from the competition having failed to win a single game.
United are waiting for further medical assessments to determine the extent of the damage. According to reports, the club fear the injury could be significant and are expected to speak with the player’s representatives once detailed scan results are available.
The injury could have major consequences for United’s plans in the transfer window. Ugarte was widely expected to be moved on this summer having failed to impress since he joined the club in 2024.
United are currently working on a midfield rebuild ahead of the new season with Michael Carrick. They have already signed Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta and have been linked with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni.
A lengthy absence for Ugarte would mean that the club would be unable to sell him, which could impact their incomings.
