The 18-year-old joins from Tottenham what could United fans expect from him?
Manchester United have signed young winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal that could be worth up to £8m.
The 18-year-old joined after United agreed to pay an initial £4m, with a further £4m depending on how well he develops at the senior level. Tottenham have also secured a sell-on clause and matching rights as part of the agreement.
Thompson developed through Tottenham’s academy as a left-sided attacker. An England youth international, he enjoyed a productive campaign last season, scoring 13 goals and providing six assists across Spurs’ under-18 and under-21 sides.
His performances included seven goals in seven Uefa Youth League matches and earned him places on the bench for Champions League fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Tottenham’s Carabao Cup tie against Doncaster Rovers.
But why have United signed him and what could fans expect going forward? The youngster is actually expected to link up with Michael Carrick’s first-team squad rather than join the youth team. This is a transfer that the club expect to turn out like the move for Ayden Heaven, who joined from Arsenal in January 2025 for £1.5m. Heaven has since made 24 senior appearances.
United have been improving their recruitment strategy under Ineos. One aspect of that is to make intelligent, value signings, like the moves for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, rather than overpaying for players as they have done in the recent past.
Another aspect of their strategy is to recruit young domestic talent. As a result, United have been investing in highly rated teenagers from leading English academies. Recent examples are Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi Martins, who were both signed from Arsenal. Heaven has made the first team but Martins still needs more time at the youth level.
Tynan Thompson is the latest signing of that ilk. United are also pursuing other young prospects, with Manchester City’s 16-year-old midfielder Karim Cassim among those under consideration.
