Manchester United’s relationship with JJ Gabriel broke down because the youngster’s representatives wanted the club to play him for at least 20 minutes in three matches before discussing a scholarship.

The matches identified by Gabriel’s representatives were against Sabah FK, Brighton and Bournemouth, with the latter scheduled for 25 October at Old Trafford. United have yet to resume talks with the player, who turns 16 on Tuesday.

Gabriel has not trained with United since leaving the club before their Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton on 16 September. His representatives then asked for his registration to be cancelled after he had been expected to make his competitive first-team debut.

The 15-year-old had already played for United in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid. He was not included in the Champions League squad, however, and his camp subsequently raised concerns about the opportunities available to him.

Gabriel’s representatives believe some promises made by United have not been fulfilled, according to people familiar with the situation.

The dispute continues but Gabriel can sign a pre-agreement for any club from his 16th birthday, which has increased the possibility of him leaving United if the two sides cannot fix their relationship.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the clubs linked with the forward, although United have not received a formal enquiry. The club is prepared to take legal action if evidence emerges that another club has approached Gabriel outside the permitted rules.

United insist they have provided a clear route towards senior football. Sources say the club gave Gabriel access to coaches and specialist staff normally working with first-team players, and officials have continued trying to check on his wellbeing since he stopped attending training.

There is nevertheless concern inside United about the influence of Gabriel’s representatives, including members of his family. The club believe some of those around him have been more interested in him breaking records than in his overall development.
