Manchester United have opened talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract after Galatasaray made a move to lure the Portuguese to Turkey this summer.
Galatasaray offered Fernandes a salary of €20m (£17.1m) a year to agree to a transfer.
Fernandes wants to stay at Old Trafford and United are not considering his sale. His current contract, which he signed in August 2024, runs until 2027 and contains an option for a further year.
The Turkish club’s approach has nevertheless forced United to have conversations over Fernandes’s future. The midfielder had a €65m release clause that was available to foreign clubs earlier in the summer, but that provision has now expired. United insist they have received no contact from other clubs and maintain that Fernandes is not for sale.
Fernandes, who turns 32 in September, is entering the final phase of a contract that has made him one of United’s highest-paid players. With Casemiro having left, only Marcus Rashford is understood to earn more at the club.
The Portugal international rejected a major financial opportunity last summer, when Al-Hilal pursued him with a proposal worth up to €40m a year. Fernandes chose to remain at United as he prioritised playing for the club. He also wants the chance to compete for major trophies.

His standing at the club has strengthened since then. Fernandes was named the Football Writers’ Association men’s footballer of the year after a 2025-26 season in which he scored nine Premier League goals and set a competition record with 21 assists. His performances helped United return to the Champions League after two seasons outside Europe’s elite competition.
Fernandes has also been a central figure since becoming captain at the start of the 2023-24 season. He joined United from Sporting in January 2020 for an initial £47m and has made 327 appearances, scoring 107 goals.
He has been voted United’s player of the season in five of his seven campaigns, with only Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford winning the award during his time at the club. He has also won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and helped United reach two Europa League finals.
Galatasaray’s interest comes as the Turkish club continues to target established players. They signed Victor Osimhen in 2024 and Leroy Sane last summer, while an approach for Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli was rejected by the player earlier this month.
Fernandes returned to United training at the start of August after Portugal’s World Cup campaign and featured in the club’s final three pre-season matches.
