Agreement with the Dutch team means the club will no longer pay a full severance package to their former manager
Liverpool have lucked out as they are set to save millions in compensation after Arne Slot takes over as head coach of the Netherlands.
The club’s title-winning manager in 2025 is close to agreeing terms that will make him become the Dutch national team boss. That would mean Liverpool will no longer need to pay him the full severance package owed him after his dismissal at the end of last season.
Slot left Anfield only two months ago after spending two years in charge, during which he guided Liverpool to just their second Premier League title in the 21st century. He had been placed on gardening leave as part of his departure agreement and remained entitled to significant compensation under the remainder of his contract.
The Dutch team parted ways with former manager Ronald Koeman after his side exited the World Cup in the round of 32 against Morocco. The Dutch football association (KNVB) is looking to appoint his successor before the Netherlands begin their Nations League campaign against Germany in September.
Slot’s contract at Liverpool was originally worth a total of around €25m across three years, with around €8m of that sum coming in his first season. But after he won the Premier League he was rewarded with a substantial pay rise that kicked in for his second and third seasons and was worth around €30m in total. Although he was sacked, Liverpool would still have been liable to pay the rest of the package.
If the new agreement with the Dutch team is finalised it means Liverpool will no longer be responsible for paying that full amount.
The Reds replaced Slot with former Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola, who has lately hinted at dissatisfaction that business in the transfer window has been slow so far, as he aims to lead the club in a rebuild. So far, Liverpool have signed Spain winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna.
