Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to one of the greatest careers in Argentina history just weeks after the World Cup final defeat to Spain.

For Argentina supporters, the words they had always dreaded finally arrived.  Messi confirmed that he will no longer represent his country, ending a 21-year international career that began in 2005 and produced 125 goals in 207 appearances.

The 39-year-old leaves behind two Copa América titles and, most importantly, the World Cup trophy he spent so many years chasing.

Messi admitted the decision was painful, but insisted he had reached the point where walking away was the right thing to do. “There isn’t much time left, and different chapters are coming to an end. This is one that hurts me a lot,” he said. “I love, I loved, and I will always love being part of the national team. I gave everything I had, and I don’t have anything more to give.”

His final major tournament ended in heartbreaking fashion. Argentina’s incredible run of three consecutive major trophies between 2021 and 2024 was eventually halted by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, with Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal denying Messi another World Cup triumph. Even in defeat, the Argentine captain produced another remarkable campaign, scoring eight times to take his World Cup tally to 21.

That number tells only part of the story.  Messi scored at five different World Cups and became the only player to win the tournament’s Golden Ball twice, first in 2014 and then again in 2022. That second triumph finally delivered the trophy that had eluded him, ending Argentina’s 36-year wait for football’s biggest prize.

Messi’s journey with Argentina was anything but straightforward. There were years of heartbreak, criticism and near misses, including defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final and Copa América final losses before his international career finally exploded into its golden era.

From the Copa América triumph in 2021 to the 2022 World Cup and another Copa América title in 2024, Messi eventually gave Argentina supporters everything they had dreamed of.

The decision was made even more difficult by the death of his father, Jorge, on August 8. Messi revealed that he had written his retirement statement shortly after the World Cup final on July 21, but said the loss of his father had made him even more certain that it was time to step away.

“Thank you for all the love during these 20 years,” Messi wrote. “Now I’ll be one of you, always supporting from the outside, in the good times and even more in the bad ones.”

There will never be another international career quite like Messi’s. The trophies, records and goals are staggering, but perhaps his greatest achievement was turning years of disappointment into an era Argentina supporters will remember forever.

The boy who once carried the weight of an entire nation on his shoulders can finally put the shirt down.
