Poland international says he leaves with “the feeling that the mission is complete”

Robert Lewandowski has confirmed he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season, bringing an end to a successful four-year spell with the La Liga champions.

The 37-year-old striker announced his decision in a message posted on social media, closing the chapter on a period that saw him help restore Barcelona’s domestic dominance following his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2022.

“After four years full of challenges and hard work, it’s time to move on,” Lewandowski wrote on Instagram. “I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete. Four seasons, three championships. I will never forget the love I received from the fans from my very first days. Catalonia is my place on earth.

“Thank you to everyone I met along the way during these beautiful four years. A special thank you to president Joan Laporta for giving me the chance to live the most incredible chapter of my career. Barca is back where it belongs.

Lewandowski will get the opportunity to say goodbye to supporters on Sunday when Barcelona host Real Betis at Camp Nou in their final home match of the campaign.

The veteran forward had been linked with a contract extension earlier in the year, although discussions reportedly centred on reduced terms. Instead, he has opted to depart when his current deal expires.

His next destination remains uncertain, with interest emerging from clubs across Europe, Saudi Arabia and the US, including Chicago Fire.

Although no longer an automatic starter this season, with the No 9 role often shared with Ferran Torres, Lewandowski remained productive in front of goal. He scored 18 times as Barcelona secured both the La Liga title and the Spanish Supercopa.

Since completing his €45m move from Bayern Munich, the Poland international has registered 119 goals in 191 appearances for Barcelona. His trophy haul in Spain includes three league titles, three Supercopas and one Copa del Rey.
