Heading into the match, Leverkusen knew only a win—combined with favourable results elsewhere—would keep their slim Champions League hopes alive. They started strongly, controlling possession and territory, but struggled to carve out clear chances against a disciplined Hamburg defence.
Their best opportunity in the first half came from the penalty spot after Jordan Torunarigha was judged to have brought down Patrik Schick inside the box. However, the Czech striker was unable to convert, as his effort was comfortably saved, denying the hosts a crucial breakthrough.
Hamburg gradually grew into the game as the first half progressed, with goalkeeper Mark Flekken forced into action to keep out a long-range strike from Albert Sambi Lokonga. At the other end, Robert Andrich came close from a set-piece routine but sent his effort high over the bar, leaving the match goalless at the break.
Leverkusen increased the intensity after the restart, with Ibrahim Maza testing the edge of the Hamburg box, though his shot drifted narrowly wide. Despite the renewed pressure, Hamburg continued to pose a threat on the counterattack, keeping the hosts cautious.
The visitors eventually struck first just after the hour mark when Fábio Vieira picked up possession outside the box and curled a superb effort into the top corner, giving Hamburg a surprise lead and putting Leverkusen under serious pressure.
Leverkusen responded with urgency and finally found an equaliser 12 minutes from time, as a dangerous set-piece caused confusion in the box and Nicolai Remberg inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, restoring parity for the home side.
The match ended 1-1, confirming a disappointing conclusion to Leverkusen’s season under Kasper Hjulmand, as they missed out on Champions League qualification and had to settle for a Europa League spot, while Hamburg finished 13th after a solid return to the Bundesliga.
