Vincent Kompany has praised Harry Kane’s brilliance ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against PSG.

Vincent Kompany has delivered a glowing assessment of Harry Kane ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, insisting the England captain is not slowing down as he approaches his mid-thirties but instead becoming an even more complete footballer.

Bayern head into the heavyweight European clash with Kane once again as their central attacking weapon, and Kompany believes the striker is producing some of the finest football of his career.

The statistics alone underline just how influential Kane has been for the German champions this season. The former Tottenham Hotspur forward has scored 12 goals in just 11 Champions League appearances, including crucial strikes in both legs of Bayern’s dramatic quarter-final triumph over Real Madrid.

Across all competitions, he has found the net 53 times in 45 matches, a return that would be exceptional for any striker, let alone one who turns 33 in July.

But for Kompany, Kane’s contribution goes far beyond goals. Speaking on Monday, the Bayern coach explained that while Kane’s finishing ability and natural leadership were always well known, his intelligence in possession, relentless work rate, and ability to knit together attacking moves have become even more apparent since his move to Germany in 2023.

According to Kompany, Kane’s willingness to drop deep, help Bayern progress the ball, and still arrive in scoring areas is what makes his current level so extraordinary. That is why Kompany used the phrase “ageing like fine wine” to describe his star striker.

In his view, Kane has added new layers to his game rather than merely preserving what already made him elite. Bayern are no longer relying on a static penalty-box finisher; they now have a roaming focal point capable of dictating tempo, creating chances, leading the press and then delivering the decisive finish. It is a blend that has made him one of the most complete forwards in European football this season.

Bayern’s semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain offers Kane another chance to prove that on the biggest platform. The German side return to Paris with confidence after previous tightly contested meetings between the clubs, including a 2-1 victory there during the league phase in November. However, Kompany was quick to stress that every recent encounter with Luis Enrique’s side has been balanced on small moments, with little separating two teams loaded with attacking quality.

The Belgian coach agreed with Luis Enrique’s suggestion that this tie will be decided by details. Bayern have beaten PSG before, PSG have also had their revenge in other meetings, and Kompany believes both clubs know each other’s strengths almost too well now.

There are, however, some complications for Bayern heading into the first leg.

Kompany himself will be absent from the touchline due to suspension following his booking against Real Madrid, while injuries to Raphael Guerreiro and Serge Gnabry reduce his options. Gnabry’s absence is expected to open the door for Jamal Musiala, who is set to start against the very team involved in the Club World Cup match last July where he suffered a broken leg.

Despite those setbacks, Bayern arrive in Paris with momentum firmly on their side. The Bundesliga title is already secured, they are through to the German Cup final, and Kane is in devastating rhythm. Bayern believe they possess every tool required to spoil the French champions’ European dream.
