Bayern Munich were left to rue a string of missed opportunities as Loris Karius produced a series of crucial saves to earn Schalke a 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen.
Vincent Kompany rotated his side with Bayern’s Champions League campaign in mind, leaving several of his biggest stars on the bench. Even so, the Bundesliga champions started brightly and immediately put Schalke under pressure.
Alphonso Davies almost caught Karius out inside the opening 10 minutes when his cross-cum-shot drifted narrowly wide. Nathaniel Brown then came even closer, only for the Schalke goalkeeper to produce an excellent one-handed stop after Aleksandar Pavlovic had created the opening.
Schalke gradually settled and became increasingly difficult to break down. The hosts also felt they should have been awarded a penalty on two occasions, but referee Robert Schroder waved away both appeals as the contest grew more even.

Bayern continued to create the better openings, with Ismael Saibari curling an effort just over from an angle. Schalke responded through Adil Aouchiche, whose free-kick from the edge of the box forced Manuel Neuer into action as the Bayern captain got behind the effort.
Kompany made his first major move at half-time, sending Harry Kane onto the pitch in search of a breakthrough. However, Bayern’s most glaring opportunity after the restart fell to Luis Diaz.
The winger raced in behind the Schalke defence and lifted the ball over the advancing Karius, only for Hasan Kurucay to make a sensational goal-line clearance and keep the hosts level.
Michael Olise was introduced shortly afterwards and immediately threatened. He burst into the penalty area from the right but could only fire his effort straight at Karius.

Konrad Laimer then squandered another excellent chance when he slipped unnoticed into the Schalke box, but with the goal at his mercy, he hammered his effort into the side netting.
Bayern threw everything forward late on, but Karius saved his best moment for stoppage time. The goalkeeper produced a superb stop to deny Kane and preserve a memorable clean sheet.

The draw extended Bayern’s unbeaten Bundesliga away run to 27 matches, but it also brought a remarkable scoring streak to an end. For the first time in 60 competitive games, Bayern failed to find the net, while their record run of 67 consecutive matchdays at the top of the Bundesliga table also came to an end.
Bayern Munich were held to a 0-0 draw by Schalke as Loris Karius produced a series of superb saves, ending the champions’ 60-game scoring streak.
