An overhaul is expected across the club as they seek to rectify the mistakes of this season
Jose Mourinho is certainly coming to Real Madrid, even if the club are yet to announce it. They are preparing sweeping personnel changes as they anticipate the Portuguese’s arrival, keen particularly to avoid all of the problems that occurred around the squad this season.
Sources said uncertainty has spread around the club’s training base at Valdebebas, with some staff concerned about being affected by a possible clearout.
Mourinho has reportedly agreed verbally to a two-year deal to replace Alvaro Arbeloa. First, the Portuguese coach is expected to arrive with his own coaching staff, likely the team he currently works with at Benfica.
But an overhaul is also expected in Madrid’s medical department after a season disrupted by injuries. Changes could affect current staff members such as fitness coach Antonio Pintus.
In the sporting department, goalkeeping coach Luis Llopis could leave, while Madrid are also considering strengthening communication between the first team and senior management through a new appointment within the sporting structure.
Former midfielder Toni Kroos has been mentioned internally for such a role, although people close to the player have reported that no proposal has been made.
In term of the squad, Mourinho is prioritising defensive reinforcements. Madrid are seeking a replacement for departing captain Dani Carvajal at right-back to compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Centre-back additions are also under consideration as the club prepare to be more active in the transfer market than in recent years.
