PSG’s dramatic Champions League final victory over Arsenal will be remembered for its tension, quality, and eventual triumph on penalties.
It was a contest between Europe’s most prolific attack and the competition’s strongest defence, with both sides arriving in Budapest carrying the weight of history on their shoulders. Heading into the final, many observers believed the momentum was with Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side arrived unbeaten away from home in the competition and had won five of their previous six matches across all competitions. The Portuguese international did not produce the kind of spectacular moments that dominate highlight reels, but his impact was visible in almost every phase of the game. At just 21 years old, Neves demonstrated maturity far beyond his years, becoming the only starting PSG midfielder to complete the entire match. As the game progressed and spaces began to open up, he repeatedly found pockets between Arsenal’s lines and used them to drive PSG forward.

His ability to anticipate situations before they developed proved invaluable. Whether receiving the ball under pressure, turning away from challenges, or creating passing angles for teammates, Neves consistently stayed one step ahead of Arsenal’s midfield. His movement allowed PSG to maintain control during difficult periods and prevented the Gunners from establishing sustained pressure.
The numbers behind his performance underline just how influential he was.
Neves contested 23 ground duels, more than any other player on the pitch, while also competing in 10 aerial battles. He recovered possession six times, second only to Achraf Hakimi among PSG players, and earned seven fouls throughout the match. Those fouls may seem insignificant on paper, but they repeatedly disrupted Arsenal’s momentum and allowed PSG to reset when under pressure.

Defensively, Neves was equally impressive. He attempted more tackles than any of his PSG teammates and recorded the joint-highest number of successful tackles for the French side. His two interceptions were also the most by any PSG player. Even when Arsenal appeared to be building dangerous attacks, Neves consistently positioned himself intelligently to break up play and protect his defence.
His contribution was not limited to defensive work either.
Neves registered four shots, matching Ousmane Dembélé for the most attempts among PSG players, while his 11 touches inside the Arsenal penalty area were more than anyone else on the field.
Although his passing accuracy of 87.5 percent was slightly below some of his teammates, his willingness to play progressive passes and take risks in advanced areas gave PSG a crucial attacking dimension.
