Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha went from an unknown veteran with 50,000 Instagram followers to one of the biggest stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
When the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off, almost nobody outside Cape Verde knew who Vozinha was.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper arrived at football’s biggest tournament without the profile of a global star, without a club, and with barely 50,000 followers on Instagram.
Three weeks later, he walked away as arguably the greatest cult hero of the competition. Millions of football fans across the world now knew his name, Lionel Messi had praised him after one of the performances of the tournament.
In Cape Verde’s historic World Cup debut against Spain, the veteran produced one of the finest goalkeeping displays the tournament has ever seen.
Spain peppered his goal with 27 shots, but the experienced shot-stopper stood firm, making seven outstanding saves to earn a remarkable 0-0 draw. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and made him the oldest goalkeeper ever to keep a clean sheet on his World Cup debut.

That incredible display was more than just a great individual performance, it gave Cape Verde belief. Instead of simply making up the numbers at their first-ever World Cup, the tiny island nation suddenly looked capable of competing with the very best.
Throughout the group stage, Vozinha remained the team’s emotional leader and biggest difference-maker. While there were matches where Cape Verde struggled collectively and defensive mistakes crept into their performances, their captain between the posts continued to produce save after save, keeping his nation alive whenever they looked under pressure.
His greatest performance, however, arguably came after the group stage. Drawn against defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32, Cape Verde were expected to be comfortably beaten. Instead, they produced one of the stories of the tournament.
For 120 unforgettable minutes, Vozinha frustrated Lionel Messi and his teammates with a string of brilliant saves, dragging Cape Verde into extra time in a thrilling contest that finished 3-2 in Argentina’s favour. Even in defeat, the African underdogs walked off the pitch with the admiration of the football world, and their goalkeeper emerged as the undisputed star of the occasion.

Perhaps the most remarkable transformation happened away from the football pitch.
Before the World Cup began, Vozinha’s Instagram account had just over 50,000 followers. After his heroics against Spain, those numbers exploded almost instantly, before continuing to rise throughout Cape Verde’s magical run.
By the end of the tournament, the goalkeeper had amassed around 25 million followers, making him the most-followed goalkeeper on Instagram and one of the fastest-rising sporting personalities in social media history. His audience now dwarfs the population of Cape Verde itself many times over.

The sudden fame has also changed perceptions of what might come next in his career.
At 40, most goalkeepers are preparing for retirement, yet Vozinha now finds himself at the centre of transfer speculation. Having entered the World Cup as a free agent, he suddenly has clubs monitoring his situation after consistently producing elite performances against some of the best attacking players in world football.
Whether he earns one final opportunity in European football remains to be seen, but the World Cup has undoubtedly reopened doors that once appeared firmly shut.
Beyond the numbers and transfer rumours, Vozinha has become something much bigger than a footballer. For Cape Verde, a nation of just over half a million people, he has become a symbol of what is possible.
His performances inspired millions of supporters back home and introduced the country to audiences who had never previously watched its national team. In many ways, he has become not only Cape Verde’s biggest football star but arguably its most recognisable public figure on the global stage.
