“It’s Up to the Club”: Maguire Sends Warning to Manchester United About More Signings

Harry Maguire has called on his Manchester United bosses to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes.

United have signed two midfielders this summer to fill glaring holes in the squad, but there is still a lot more to do if they are to be competitive this season.

Maguire, who is one of the leaders of the squad, understands that more quality signings are still needed if they are to win silverware under Michael Carrick within the next year.

“I’m at an age now where they can bring in as many players as they want, bring in all the best players,” Maguire said. “I want to win all the trophies and be greedy about it, but it’s up to the club.

“I’m sure they’re working hard out there to try and bring in the right players, the more the merrier. The stronger the squad, the more opportunity we have of winning these trophies and that’s what it’s all about when you play for this club.”

United are still weak in midfield and defence, especially at left-back, where an upgrade on Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu would boost their ability on and off the ball.

Maguire said the squad had the belief to compete but accepted the demands at Old Trafford were high.

“Everyone wants to win the Premier League, of course that is going to be our aim, that’s what this club demands,” he said. “We have the belief we can be really competitive and we can beat anyone on our day. It’s going to be an exciting season.”

Maguire is entering his eighth season at United and his role has changed since his £80m move from Leicester City in 2019. The 33-year-old remains an important member of Carrick’s defence but is also helping to develop younger centre-backs. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are options both now and for the future, and 18-year-old Dan Armer has attracted attention from supporters who have compared him with Maguire.

“I think that comes quite naturally to me, I want them to have amazing careers,” Maguire said. “Hopefully in five or six years’ time, Leny, Ayden and Dan are fighting it out and playing together in this team – that’s all I want.”

Maguire also believes the current squad is among the closest groups he has experienced at United. The club’s improvement from 15th to third last season, despite losing the Europa League final, has raised expectations ahead of the new campaign.

“Spending time together and winning football matches brings teams closer,” he said. “Losing that Europa League final, finishing 15th to finishing third and putting the club back in the Champions League, it was a good season but we can’t stop here.”
