Coach insists side can compete with PSG and Bayern as La Liga title edges closer

Hansi Flick believes Barcelona can compete with Europe’s elite despite their recent exit from the Champions League.

Flick’s comments follow the high-scoring semi-final first leg in which Paris Saint-Germain defeated Bayern Munich 5-4. Barcelona were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid, extending their wait for a Champions League final appearance to 11 years.

“One hundred percent,” Flick said when asked if his side could match PSG and Bayern. “One hundred percent, yes.”

Barcelona’s recent European struggles included dropping into the Europa League in 2022 and 2023, but the club have made progress under Flick, reaching a semi-final and a quarter-final in his two seasons in charge. Their lukewarm performance in Europe contrasts with strong domestic form, as they close in on consecutive La Liga titles.

A win over Osasuna on Saturday, combined with a slip from Real Madrid against Espanyol, could see Barcelona crowned champions this weekend, but Flick wants no complaceny.

“It’s not done yet,” Barcelona’s coach said. “This is what I want to say. We are on a good way, but we have to win some more games. Our only focus is Osasuna.”

If the title is not secured this week, Barcelona could clinch it in their next league match against Madrid on 10 May. Flick, however, played down that scenario.

“I don’t want to speak about other games coming up,” said Flick. “Just Osasuna. Nothing else.”

Barcelona will be boosted by the return of Raphinha and Marc Bernal for the trip to Pamplona, though Lamine Yamal is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

“Rapha will travel with us,” Flick confirmed. “For the team, it is great to have him. Maybe he can give us what we need. He is a player who always gives 100%. With his mentality and attitude, he helps us a lot. It is important to have him back. Bernal can also be with us [on Saturday] and could play.”
